Can any food flush out microplastics?

No — no human trial has shown that any food, drink or supplement flushes microplastics out of your body. There is no measured way to remove the particles you already carry. What the evidence does support is cutting how much new plastic you take in.

There is no verified exit route for microplastics already in the body. The lever that the evidence supports sits at the entrance — lowering how much new plastic gets in.

What actually reduces intake

  • Filtered tap over bottled water — bottled often carries as much microplastic, or more2
  • Don't heat food in plastic — reheat in glass or ceramic, not plastic2
  • Loose-leaf tea instead of plastic tea bags
  • Ventilate, use HEPA, fewer synthetic textiles — for what you breathe3

What no food does

  • "Flush", "bind" or "detox" microplastics already in you
  • Spirulina, chlorella or fibre clearing plastic in the body — no human evidence
  • Offset plastic harm with an anti-inflammatory food — untested, and two separate questions

Where this comes from

Why people believe it
Microplastics have been detected in human blood, placenta and even artery plaque, and one 2024 study of 257 patients having carotid surgery found more cardiovascular events in those with plastics in their plaque.1 Those findings are real and unsettling — so "detox" content rushes in to answer the fear. But detection is not the same as a way out, and that one study is an association in a specific surgical group, not proof that plastic causes the events.
What the human evidence shows
No trial has tested a food that removes microplastics from the body, and the major scientific authorities are measured about the harm itself. The WHO's assessment is that microplastics in drinking water 'do not appear to pose a health risk' at current levels, that particles larger than 150 µm are simply excreted, and that much of the alarming animal data is of 'questionable reliability and relevance' because it used very high doses.1 Europe's national academies (SAPEA, 2019) reached the same verdict: no widespread risk on current evidence. Detection is certain; established harm is not — and no diet is shown to reverse either.
What would change this verdict
A controlled human trial in which a normal food or drink measurably lowered the microplastic burden in the body, or improved a health outcome in exposed people. We are not aware of one in the full-text human evidence as of July 2026. If such a trial appears, this verdict changes — and the page will say so.

Why we don't point you to a "cleanse": supplements and detox products that claim to bind or flush microplastics are selling a result no human study supports. We recommend no supplement, cleanse or brand — ever. The honest move is not a purchase; it is reducing the plastic that reaches you in the first place, which every authority endorses regardless of whether harm is ever proven.

Bottom line for you

Nothing you eat or drink clears microplastics from your body — no food, no supplement, no cleanse has been shown to do it. Ignore anything that promises to bind or flush them out.

What you can do is lower how much new plastic reaches you: filter tap water rather than trusting bottled, reheat food in glass or ceramic instead of plastic, switch to loose-leaf tea, and — for the route most people forget — ventilate your rooms, run a HEPA filter, and keep fewer synthetic textiles. None of it depends on the harm being proven; it is sensible either way.
