Do beans and legumes lower cholesterol?

Yes — about one serving of beans, lentils or chickpeas a day lowered LDL cholesterol by roughly 5% across 26 trials. In people with type 2 diabetes, the same habit also improved blood sugar. It's a modest, whole-food effect.

Pulses work partly through their soluble fibre and partly by replacing more processed foods. The clear, measured effect is on LDL; the blood-sugar benefit is specific to type 2 diabetes.

Where this comes from

Why it works
Pulses are high in soluble fibre, which binds bile acids in the gut so the liver draws cholesterol from the blood to replace them — the same route as oats and barley. They also bring plant protein and resistant starch, and eating them usually means eating less of something more processed. Together that nudges LDL down.
What the human evidence shows
A confirmed meta-analysis of 26 randomised trials in 1,037 adults found that diets with a median of about 130 g of pulses a day lowered LDL cholesterol by 0.17 mmol/L — roughly a 5% reduction — against control diets; apolipoprotein B and non-HDL cholesterol did not change significantly.1 A separate confirmed meta-analysis found that in adults with type 2 diabetes, regular pulse intake lowered fasting glucose, HbA1c and insulin resistance, while the fasting-glucose effect was small and not significant in people with normal blood sugar.2
Where the evidence stops
The LDL effect is modest — around 5%, and specific to LDL rather than the whole panel. The blood-sugar benefit is clearest in type 2 diabetes; don't read it as a glucose fix for everyone. And it's the whole pulse foods that were tested, not isolated pulse-protein or fibre products.

Bottom line for you

A daily serving of beans, lentils or chickpeas — about three-quarters of a cup cooked — lowers LDL cholesterol by roughly 5%, and if you have type 2 diabetes it helps steady blood sugar as well. They're cheap, filling and among the better-evidenced everyday foods for the heart.

Keep it realistic: the cholesterol drop is modest and specific to LDL, and the blood-sugar benefit is mainly for people with diabetes. Pulses are a strong staple alongside oats, barley and the rest — not a replacement for medication.
