Do blueberries lower blood pressure?
Partly — blueberries reliably improve how well your blood vessels work, and about a cup a day lowered systolic blood pressure in healthy older adults. But not every trial has shown a blood-pressure fall, so the honest rating is moderate rather than strong.

Where this comes from
- Why it works
- Blueberries are rich in anthocyanins — the pigments that make them blue — which improve nitric-oxide signalling in the lining of the blood vessels. That lets the vessels relax and widen, measured in trials as better flow-mediated dilation. A lower blood-pressure reading can follow from that, but it is a step further down the chain, and it does not appear every time the vascular change does.
- What the human evidence shows
- The clearest single result is a confirmed double-blind randomised trial in healthy older adults: about a cup a day of blueberries (as freeze-dried powder) improved flow-mediated dilation, lowered 24-hour ambulatory systolic blood pressure, and improved immediate word recall.1 The vascular-function benefit is well replicated — for example a six-month trial in metabolic syndrome improved blood-vessel function too. But that same line of research is where the caution comes from: a shorter metabolic-syndrome trial improved vessel function with no change in blood pressure. So the vascular effect is consistent; the blood-pressure effect is best evidenced in older adults.
- What would move this to strong
- A second independent randomised trial showing the same systolic blood-pressure fall — ideally a pooled analysis across blueberry trials that measured blood pressure directly. Until the blood-pressure endpoint replicates as cleanly as the vessel-function one, the honest rating stays moderate.
Why the fruit, not an anthocyanin capsule: the trials used whole blueberries — fresh, frozen or freeze-dried — and the effect is well shown in that form. We recommend no supplement, extract or supplement brand. A cup of blueberries is the evidence; an anthocyanin pill is not the same thing.

A cup of blueberries a day is a well-evidenced way to help your blood vessels work better, and in older adults it lowered systolic blood pressure too. Fresh, frozen or freeze-dried all work — it is the whole fruit, not a supplement, that the trials tested.
Be a little measured about the blood-pressure claim specifically: it is clear in older adults but has not shown up in every trial, which is why we rate it moderate rather than strong. Eat blueberries for the vascular benefit and the broader nutrition; treat any blood-pressure improvement as a likely bonus, not a guarantee, and not a substitute for medication.
