Do cruciferous vegetables lower blood pressure?

Yes — modestly, and the evidence is decent. In a well-run controlled trial, about 300g a day of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale lowered 24-hour systolic blood pressure by roughly 2.5 mmHg compared with the same amount of other vegetables, in older adults with mildly raised pressure. It was small and short, but it lines up with large studies linking cruciferous veg to lower heart-disease death.

Where this comes from

What the human trial showed
The VESSEL study asked 18 Australian adults (mostly older women, with mildly raised blood pressure) to eat about 300g a day of cruciferous vegetables — 40% broccoli, plus cauliflower, cabbage and kale — for two weeks, and about 300g a day of root and squash vegetables for another two weeks, with a break in between.1 Because everyone did both, each person was their own comparison. On the cruciferous diet, 24-hour systolic blood pressure was about 2.5 mmHg lower (95% CI −4.2 to −0.9, P=0.002), with the daytime difference larger at about 3.6 mmHg. Triglycerides also dropped slightly.
What it's built on — and where it stops
Two things put this at moderate rather than strong. It's one small trial (18 people, two weeks per arm), so it needs replicating in a bigger, longer study. And the benefit was narrow: diastolic pressure, LDL and total cholesterol, inflammation markers and arterial stiffness didn't differ between the two diets. What lifts it above a single small result is the population evidence behind it — in a study of over 130,000 Chinese adults, higher cruciferous vegetable intake was linked to lower total and cardiovascular death,2 and similar links appear in older women and other groups. The trial gives that association a plausible mechanism.
How to read it
A 2.5 mmHg drop is small on its own and won't stand in for treatment if you need it. But small systolic reductions across a whole diet add up, and at a population level even a couple of mmHg tracks with fewer strokes and heart attacks. Treat cruciferous vegetables as one worthwhile part of a blood-pressure-friendly pattern — alongside more potassium-rich produce, less salt, regular movement and a healthy weight — and remember this was whole veg on the plate, not a supplement. We recommend none.

The practical version: building meals around broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale is a sensible, evidence-backed move for blood pressure — the effect is real but modest, so it works best as part of the wider picture rather than a fix on its own. Cruciferous vegetables earn their reputation here. A well-designed trial found that eating about 300g a day of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale lowered systolic blood pressure by around 2.5 mmHg compared with other vegetables — a real effect, backed by large studies linking these vegetables to lower heart-disease death.

Keep the claim in proportion, though. The trial was small and short, the drop is modest, and it didn't touch cholesterol or inflammation. So make these vegetables a regular, generous part of your plate as one piece of a blood-pressure-friendly diet — not a replacement for medication or a reason to buy sprout supplements.
