Do prunes protect bone density?

Yes — about 5 to 6 prunes a day preserved hip bone density over a year in postmenopausal women, while women eating none lost bone. Two honest framings: it prevents loss rather than rebuilding bone, and most of the research is funded by the prune industry.

Where this comes from

Why it works
Prunes are rich in polyphenols and also supply vitamin K, potassium and boron — nutrients tied to bone. In cell and animal work these appear to slow bone resorption, the breakdown side of bone turnover, and support formation a little. After menopause, falling oestrogen tips that balance towards loss, so anything that slows the breakdown helps hold density steady.
What the human evidence shows
The anchor is a confirmed 12-month randomised trial in 235 postmenopausal women with low bone density. Total hip bone density fell 1.1% in the control group over the year, but only 0.3% in the group eating 50 g of prunes a day — a significant difference, and hip-fracture risk on the FRAX tool worsened in the controls while holding in the prune group.1 A 100 g dose was no better and had far more dropouts, so 50 g is the effective amount. Earlier trials (Hooshmand 2011, using 100 g against dried apple) and a comprehensive review reach the same conclusion.2
Where the evidence stops — and a funding note
The effect is preserving bone, not reversing loss, and it is shown in postmenopausal women, so don't extend it further. Because a whole food can't be disguised, the trials are open-label. And the honest disclosure: most prune-and-bone research, including this trial, is funded by the California Prune Board. The funder had no role in the analysis, independent university groups ran the studies, and the results replicate across separate labs — which is why the rating stays strong — but you should know where the money came from.

If you're postmenopausal, a small daily habit of 5 to 6 prunes is a well-evidenced way to help hold onto hip bone density — the group that ate them kept their bone over a year while the group that didn't lost measurable ground. There's no benefit to eating more than about 50 g, and it pairs naturally with well-loaded strength training, which builds bone rather than just preserving it.

Keep the framing honest: prunes slow bone loss, they don't rebuild bone, the evidence is in postmenopausal women, and most of the research is prune-industry funded — run by independent academics and replicated, but funded all the same. A sensible, low-cost habit, not a treatment for diagnosed osteoporosis.
