Is dark chocolate good for you?

Verdict — Yes, flavanol-rich cocoa

The benefits are real, but they belong to flavanols — not to a sugary chocolate bar. In trials, flavanol-rich cocoa improved blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and blood-vessel function, and in older adults it improved thinking speed, plus modest skin UV protection. Most chocolate is low in flavanols and high in sugar, so it doesn't count.

The active ingredient is the flavanol, at a real dose, in low-sugar cocoa. Ordinary chocolate delivers little flavanol and a lot of sugar — the opposite trade.

What flavanol-rich cocoa can do

  • Improve cardiometabolic markers — blood pressure, glucose, insulin and lipids across 19 RCTs2
  • In older adults, faster processing speed and verbal fluency, dose-dependently1
  • Modest skin UV protection — a higher UV-reddening threshold3

What it doesn't mean

  • That a sugary chocolate bar is health food — most chocolate is low-flavanol, high-sugar
  • A sunscreen replacement — the skin effect is modest, not protective like SPF
  • Sharper young, healthy brains — cognition evidence is in older adults / MCI

Where this comes from

What the human evidence shows
A dose-response randomised trial — the CoCoA study — gave 90 older adults a daily cocoa drink with high (993 mg), intermediate (520 mg) or low (48 mg) flavanols for 8 weeks.1 The higher-flavanol groups completed attention and processing-speed tasks significantly faster and improved verbal fluency more, and also showed better blood pressure, insulin resistance and a marker of oxidative stress. A meta-analysis of 19 randomised trials backs the cardiometabolic side: cocoa flavanols improved blood pressure, fasting glucose, insulin and lipid markers.2 For skin, a 2025 meta-analysis found flavanol-rich cocoa raised the skin's UV-reddening threshold.3
The catch — flavanols, not chocolate
Every one of these benefits depends on the flavanol dose, roughly 500 to 1000 mg a day, from flavanol-rich cocoa. Ordinary alkalised ("Dutched") cocoa and most chocolate bars are low in flavanols, and the sugar and fat that come with a bar work against the effect. So the honest translation is not "eat chocolate," but "a little genuinely flavanol-rich, low-sugar cocoa" — high-percentage dark chocolate in small amounts, or non-alkalised cocoa powder.
Where the evidence stops
The effects are modest. The cognition benefit is shown in older adults and people with mild cognitive impairment — some trials in young, healthy adults are null — so we scope it that way. The skin effect is photoprotection, not sun protection, and the studies varied a lot, with no consistent wrinkle or elasticity benefit. And the strongest endpoints are short-term surrogate markers. Flavanol-rich cocoa is a genuinely useful food in small amounts, not a treatment.

The practical version: a small amount of high-percentage dark chocolate, or a spoon of non-alkalised cocoa, gives you the flavanols without much sugar — that's the version the evidence supports. A sugary chocolate bar is a treat, not a health food, and eating more won't help. We recommend no cocoa or flavanol supplement, and we sell nothing.

Bottom line for you

If you like dark chocolate, there's real evidence behind it — as long as it's the flavanol-rich, low-sugar kind. A small amount of high-percentage dark chocolate, or a spoon of non-alkalised cocoa, is linked to better blood pressure and insulin sensitivity, sharper processing speed in older adults, and a little extra skin resistance to UV.

Keep it honest, though: the benefit is the flavanol, not the sugar, and most chocolate bars are the wrong side of that trade. Small servings, high cocoa, low sugar — and none of it replaces sun protection or standard care. We recommend no cocoa supplement, and we sell nothing.
