Is fish good for your brain?

Likely — higher fish intake is linked to slower cognitive decline and lower dementia risk, around 18% lower in the pooled studies, rising to about 30% at 150 g a day. About a serving a week of oily fish is also linked to lower mortality. It's an association, not proof — and, importantly, it's eating fish, not fish-oil pills.

Where this comes from

What the human evidence shows
For the brain, the anchor is a 2024 dose-response meta-analysis of 35 observational studies.1 Comparing the highest with the lowest fish intake, risk was about 18% lower for cognitive impairment or decline (relative risk 0.82), 18% lower for dementia and 20% lower for Alzheimer's, and the dose-response showed risk falling by up to about 30% at 150 g of fish a day. A pooled analysis of five cohorts (roughly 24,000 older adults) likewise linked higher fish intake to slower memory and thinking decline.3 For mortality, a UK Biobank study of 431,062 adults found about one serving of oily fish a week was associated with 7% lower all-cause and 15% lower cardiovascular death versus never eating it.2
Fish, not fish oil
This is the crucial distinction. The benefits above come from eating fish, and they have not carried over cleanly to omega-3 supplements: the large trials of fish-oil capsules have been mixed and mostly null for preventing heart disease or protecting cognition in the general population. Whole fish delivers protein, selenium, iodine, vitamin D and a food matrix a capsule can't replicate. So the honest, evidence-led message is to eat fish — we don't recommend fish-oil supplements.
Where the evidence stops
All of this is observational, so it shows association, not proof, and it isn't unanimous — at least one careful cohort found no link between fish and dementia, and fish-eaters tend to be healthier in other ways. Two practical notes: cook fish gently (grill, bake, poach) rather than deep-frying, and be mindful of mercury — larger predatory fish such as shark and swordfish are best limited, particularly in pregnancy, where official guidance advises lower-mercury choices.

The practical version: aim for one to two servings a week of oily fish — salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring or trout — grilled, baked or poached. It's one of the better-supported food links to a slower-ageing brain and a longer life, and it does double duty for the heart. Eat the fish rather than the pill: we recommend no fish-oil supplement, and we sell nothing.

Bottom line for you

Eat fish — the evidence linking it to a slower-ageing brain is consistent and dose-responsive, with the biggest eaters showing roughly a fifth lower risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, and around a serving of oily fish a week tied to lower mortality too. One or two servings a week of salmon, sardines or mackerel, cooked gently, is a sound target.

Two honest points. It's a strong association, not proof, and it isn't unanimous across every cohort. And it's the fish that matters, not fish-oil capsules, whose trials have largely disappointed — so eat the fish, mind the mercury in big predatory species, and skip the pills. We recommend no supplement, and we sell nothing.
