Does yogurt lower your risk of type 2 diabetes?

- What the human evidence shows
- The anchor is a dose-response meta-analysis of 14 cohort studies of dairy and type 2 diabetes.1 Higher intakes of total dairy, low-fat dairy, cheese and yogurt were each inversely associated with diabetes risk. For yogurt, each 50 g a day was linked to about 9% lower risk (relative risk 0.91), with a confidence interval that just touches 1.00 — so the yogurt-specific estimate is real but borderline. Cheese (0.80 per 30 g/day) and low-fat dairy (0.88 per 200 g/day) showed similar or slightly stronger links, and the benefit was strongest within about 200 g of dairy a day.
- Why this is moderate, not strong
- Two reasons. First, it's entirely observational — you can't randomise people to eat yogurt for years, and yogurt-eaters tend to have healthier diets and lifestyles overall, which can create or inflate the link. The authors themselves conclude the finding "needs confirmation in randomised controlled trials." Second, trials measuring blood-sugar markers with specific yogurts have been mixed and strain-dependent, so there's no clean experimental backup yet.
- Where the evidence stops
- The link is for plain, unsweetened yogurt — sweetened and fruit yogurts carry a lot of added sugar, which points the wrong way for blood-sugar health and confounds the data, so don't read this as a green light for dessert pots. And it's about the risk of developing diabetes in the population, not a way to treat it. Plain yogurt is a sound, protein-rich food that fits a diabetes-preventive pattern; it just isn't a proven, stand-alone intervention.
The practical version: plain natural or Greek yogurt is a genuinely good everyday food — protein-rich, filling, and linked to slightly lower diabetes risk — so it's worth including if you enjoy it. Keep it unsweetened and add your own fruit rather than buying sugary pots. Don't treat it as a diabetes cure; it's one small, sensible part of a healthy diet.
