How many steps a day do you need?
Fewer than 10,000. Across 15 cohorts and 47,471 adults, more daily steps meant lower risk of dying — but the benefit levelled off around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for over-60s, and 8,000 to 10,000 for younger adults. Total steps matter more than speed, and it's a strong association rather than proof of cause.

- What the human evidence shows
- The anchor is a 2022 meta-analysis of 15 international cohorts — 47,471 adults with steps measured by accelerometer, 3,013 deaths over a median seven years.1 Median steps by quartile were about 3,500, 5,800, 7,800 and 10,900 a day. Compared with the lowest quartile, all-cause mortality was 40% lower in the second (HR 0.60), 45% lower in the third (0.55) and 53% lower in the fourth (0.47). Risk fell progressively up to about 6,000–8,000 steps a day in adults 60 and over, and 8,000–10,000 in younger adults, then flattened.
- The 10,000-step myth, and speed
- The authors are blunt that "10,000 steps per day is widely promoted" but has "little evidence" behind it — the figure traces to a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing name, not research. Two useful details follow: the benefit plateaus below 10,000, especially for older adults, and stepping rate (cadence) was not independently linked to mortality once total daily steps were taken into account. So it's the number of steps, not how fast you take them, that tracks with living longer.
- Where the evidence stops
- This is observational, so it shows association, not proof — and some of the link at the low end reflects reverse causation, because people who are already unwell walk less. That said, the effect is large, dose-responsive and consistent, and it fits everything else known about physical activity. The honest, encouraging read: moving from very few steps to a moderate amount is where most of the benefit lives, and you do not need to chase 10,000.
The practical version: if you're currently low, the most valuable thing is simply to walk more — the jump from a few thousand steps to six or seven thousand carries most of the benefit. A reasonable everyday target is around 7,000–8,000 steps, less for older adults, and there's little to gain from obsessing over 10,000. The evidence links more daily steps to a lower chance of dying, with the benefit flattening out around 6,000–8,000 steps for older adults and 8,000–10,000 for younger ones. The steepest gains come from leaving the least-active group behind, so if you're low now, a few thousand more steps a day is the win.
Two honest points: this is a strong association rather than proof, and total steps matter more than speed — you don't have to march. Pick a realistic daily target, build it into your routine, and treat 10,000 as an optional bonus, not a pass mark. We recommend no supplement, and we sell nothing.
