Is milk good for muscle and bone?

Yes — sensibly. Milk after resistance exercise builds more muscle and strength than a carbohydrate drink, and dairy, especially milk, is linked to higher bone density. But the muscle effect needs the training, and milk's benefit for adult fractures is modest and inconsistent. It's a genuinely useful whole food, not a magic bullet.

Where this comes from

Milk and muscle
In a controlled trial, resistance-trained men drank either high-protein dairy milk (about 30 g of protein after exercise and again before bed) or a matched carbohydrate drink, alongside six weeks of resistance training.1 The milk group gained significantly more lean mass, upper- and lower-body strength and power, with more favourable muscle-signalling hormones. This echoes a well-known earlier study in which post-exercise milk built more muscle than a matched soy drink or carbohydrate. Milk works because it delivers complete dairy protein — fast-digesting whey plus slow-digesting casein — but the gains came from milk plus the training.
Milk and bone
A 2025 umbrella review pulling together many meta-analyses found that dairy — and milk in particular — is linked to higher bone mineral density in adults, and that milk may modestly reduce markers of bone breakdown.2 The picture for actual fractures is more mixed: milk's link to fewer fractures was inconsistent, while cheese and yogurt looked a little more protective. Bone-building from dairy is strongest in childhood and adolescence. So milk clearly supports bone health by supplying calcium and protein, but its stand-alone effect on adult fractures is modest and uncertain.
Where the evidence stops
Milk is a quality protein for muscle and a good calcium source for bone — but neither benefit is a magic bullet. Muscle needs the resistance training; bone needs overall calcium and protein adequacy plus weight-bearing exercise, and milk is one convenient way to get there rather than a fracture treatment. It also isn't uniquely required: other dairy, lactose-free milk, and fortified plant milks can supply the same nutrients, which matters given how many adults digest lactose poorly. Enjoy milk if it suits you; we recommend no protein or calcium supplement.

The practical version: if you lift weights, milk (or another quality protein) around training and before bed helps build muscle — roughly 500 mL a day, low-fat if you prefer, was the trial amount. For bone, a glass or two of milk contributes usefully to your calcium and protein, best paired with weight-bearing exercise. If milk doesn't agree with you, lactose-free or fortified alternatives do the same job. We recommend no supplement, and we sell nothing.

Bottom line for you

Milk is a genuinely useful food for staying strong as you age. As a complete protein it helps build and keep muscle when paired with resistance training — beating carbohydrate and soy drinks in trials — and as a calcium-and-protein source it supports bone density. A daily glass or two, low-fat if you like, fits neatly into a muscle- and bone-friendly diet.

Keep the claims proportionate. The muscle benefit depends on the training, milk's link to fewer fractures in adults is modest and inconsistent, and milk isn't uniquely required — lactose-free or fortified alternatives supply the same nutrients if dairy doesn't suit you.
